New Jersey is seeing some nice action all along the coast. Sandy Hook and most
of No Mo Co saw some nice slammer sized blues and albies caught on
metals. Yesterday, Bill from Harry?s Army navy in Bordentown
caught several 15 pound class bass using heavy jigs. The southern
shore of rtaritan Bay is still yielding some bass under the cover of
darkness. Cedar plugs are your best bets. Further
south along Seaside and Island Beach State Park, small bluefish and bass have
been the norm with an occasional run of bigger blues and keeper bass. T-Hex and
teaser combo is a great fall presentation in Jersey. It mimics the sandeel that
invade the surf line this time of year. Teaser colors of white or chartreuse is
a favorite when matched with a thin long such as a T-Hex or Ava Jig. Tog and
some triggerfish have been taken on the North Jetty too.
The annual Long
Beach Island fishing tournament kicked off last Saturday and will run through
early December.
Down around
Brigantine, the kingfish have hit the beach hard and have been giving anglers
targeting them double digit catches.
Best
Bet
If you can
brave the wind and cold (of course you can, you're a surfcaster!!) action should
be good for striped bass close in to the beaches. Cut baits like bunker and
mullet on a short Fishfinder rig will get you out and keep you planted in the
sand and heavy metals to cut through the wind will produce
too.

Bass and big bluefish have been hitting the sands around Sandy Hook NJ this week. Big blues to 15 # have been giving surf anglers all they can handle. Inside Raritan Bay, bass are being caught during the dark hours on custom woods. During the day, big schools of slammer blues are on peanuts. Usually though, the fish have been dropping out into the bay. Nighttime fishing is the best if fishing along the southern shore of Raritan Bay. Down the beach below Manasquan down to Island Beach State Park there's a nice mix of fish to be caught. Bigger bass are under the schools of adult bunker. Some of these fish are 30 pounds. But, you have to get to them. Keeper bass have been hitting clam and bunker baits while Small 2-5 pound blues are on small metals and mullet baits. Plus, weakfish are mixed in too! Further south in New Jersey, kingfish and spot are taking bloodworms regularly. This can be an all day bite if you?re in the right spot.
The Long Beach Island Surf Fishing Classic starts this Saturday and runs to December 6th.

The
day began with a foggy start, but the sun eventually shined on more
than 800 anglers who turned out on Sunday, October 4, for the 18th
annual Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament .
Governor Jon S. Corzine and NJDEP Commissioner Mark N. Mauriello
attended as well, greeting participants and their families and friends
throughout the morning.
| Thirty anglers received awards for prize-winning fish caught off the beautiful beaches of Island Beach State Park,
but the grand prize went to Gene Brendel of Nutley, NJ for catching a
32-inch striped bass. Mr. Brendel received a plaque along with two rod
and reel combos, and will have his name engraved on the Governor's Cup,
which is permanently displayed at the park.
Overall
fish length determined the grand prize winner, as well as place winners
for each of the species categories. This year there were winning fish
tied in length in two categories; tournament rules dictate that the
first-caught and checked-in fish places higher. There were categories
for children, teen and adult anglers, including sub-categories for male
and female anglers.
The event was sponsored by the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife and Division of Parks and Forestry, the New Jersey State Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, the Jersey Coast Anglers Association, and the New Jersey Beach Buggy Association.

More than $120,000 has been raised since the inception of the tournament for conservation projects and improved beach access.
A complete list of winners follows:
