Yup they are in nj, but they're rare. I've heard of them in Raritan Bay and the Hudson River. I think someone on this sight caught one a few weeks ago if I'm not mistaken. They're protected though, so its illegal to even remove them from the water.
Are you sure you are not seeing the giant carp that cruise Tak like submarines? When I attended Monmouth unversity, I use to fish that lake between classes almost daily. Lots of big carp in there that jump and splash when startled. I can't imagine sturgeon being a common sighting in such a small heavily weeded lake.
Sturgeon in NJ, for sure. Went out the other day and there was one washed up on the beach in IBSP. Pretty cool looking.
